This dictionary is the result of more than 40 years of research and private practice of the author, who is an alumnus of the Mexico City Escuela Libre de Derecho [Free School of Law] (“ELD”), where he received his law degree on July 6, 1967, after having submitted an award-winning thesis entitled "Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Civil Judgments", which was also complimented by the oral examining panel. He pursued postgraduate comparative-law studies at Cambridge University in England, as a member of Trinity College. In 1969 he entered the prestigious Mexico City law firm of Messrs. Basham Ringe & Correa, where he practiced law until 2009, and where he handled complex legal matters of important U.S. clients, many of whom were Fortune 100 companies; for this reason, he had an opportunity to work with and compare a large number of U.S. and Mexican legal concepts and apply them on the practice of the profession.
Becerra’s areas of concentration include: corporate and business law, mergers and acquisitions, international contracts, real estate, antitrust, foreign investment, contract manufacturing operations, arbitration proceedings and related subjects. He was the managing partner of the firm from 2000 to 2003.
Becerra has participated in international conferences and seminars; has been a law professor at the ELD in charge of the Legal English Workshop for more than 25 years; has written several articles in specialized publications and is also the author of the Dictionary of the United States Legal Terminology (English-Spanish), the first edition of which was published by the ELD in 2008 and a second edition on-line in 2016.
The author wishes to acknowledge the most valuable collaboration of Ms. María Luisa López, who has been his assistant for more than 35 years, not only in the preparation of the dictionaries, but also at all times during his legal practice.
